Carbon offsets - how do you feel about them?
I have heard of a couple of websites that allow people and businesses to offset their carbon emissions by paying. I don't know much about these programs and I am not sure how I feel about them. I like the fact that the money paid is invested in alternative energy projects and such, but I am a big believer in conservation and would rather see people focusing on ways to cut back on their emissions in the first place.
I read somewhere that Al Gore's lifestyle is not totally consistent with the message he puts out in An Inconvenient Truth. The irony is that his work to educate people about climate change means that he needs to travel a great deal. In my view, this is forgivable because he has become such an influential figure on the matter. Nevertheless, I think downsizing his home and driving a smaller car would be a powerful statement.

Re: Carbon offsets - how do you feel about them?
I agree that I would rather have people conserve energy rather than offsetting their guilt by paying money for the size of their carbon footprint. But since conserving energy is such a difficult thing for many of us to do, I guess carbon offsets are a start - right? But I would like to see us eventaully go to a much more environmentally conversative and mindset liberal society.

Re: Carbon offsets - how do you feel about them?
I definitely agree. Even if people are still behaving a certain way, it is good that they are starting to think (and demonstrate a willingness to spend a little more to behave that way) about these things. I also like that the money generated is put towards alternative energy projects.
I am never going to be a fun of the 3 ton Lexus Flagship sedan that sells for 40k that happens to be a hybrid, but that is just the name of the game. At the end of the day, companies will respond to consumer demand, or lack thereof.
Right now, I am pumped to see how many Venture teams are stepping up to the plate to tackle environmental issues in their communities!
Re: Carbon offsets - how do you feel about them?
Even though our venture is not focused on environmental issues that is a huge thing for me, and our latest magazine issue brought many environmental issues to the forefront. We plan to do atleast one comic/article based on the environment per issue from now on.
I'd really like to see other ventures - whether or not focused on the environment - take a lead in becoming environmentally responsible.
Cheers!
