Re: Sustainability

~Julia R... Team..Running for a Reason @ runningforareason@gmail.com We would very much like to see our club/team include new community members who want to join our cause and add ( each year ) one new unaddressed childhood healthcare need that is similar to our initial mission. We would like to perhaps partner with another team that also looks at the healthcare needs of very ill children either locally, nationally or globally. What we do not know about is if we then need to become our own non profit or become an affinity group of one that is already in existence. Any ideas? Thank you.

Re: Sustainability

Hi Julia,

I worked under a non-profit organization to start with and it was a great way to get started. Depending on what your projects involve and if you are dealing with donations, you may want at some point later on, to start a 501C3 organization. However, to begin with, it is very time consuming. I finally did do it as I get a lot of donations for some of my projects and cannot cash the checks. It was a lot easier for me to bank all the donations, take out my expenses and then give the charities their money. I will tell you that filling out the 501c3 forms takes a lot of time and work. It says on the form something like 89 hours. It is difficult and hard for a kid. I think you should start out working for different organizations that are already established as you will learn from them as you go. Also, it is easier to get grant money. However, there again, unless your organization is well on its way, filling out a grant is very difficult and time consuming. Your time may be better spent conacting local businesses to help you.

Re: Sustainability

Hi,
We are looking into becoming an "affinity group" of the non-profit organization we help. Do you know where to find resources about this?
Thank you,
Julia
