ALMAS is an all Latina girls group started at Gresham High School in Gresham, Oregon. ALMAS is a group where members, mentor one another, morally support each another, strive for high education, encourage one another to finish high school and go on to college and learn about our cultural identity. We decided to start the ALMAS program because we saw a drastic rise in the number of dropouts; we also saw the numbers of teen pregnancies rise. We want to lower both of these statistics. ALMAS also strives to see more Latinos in high paying jobs. Within the ALMAS program we plan to make these changes come true.

The ALMAS program was also set up to give Latinas a kind of safe haven from their regular life. ALMAS gives the Latina population, a place where they can talk about certain issues happening around their school. For example the uncomfortable feeling they would get when talking about immigration issues in a class full of predominantly white students. ALMAS gives them a place where we can discuss this issue without feeling like an outcast. They support one another when they can't find that support anywhere else. ALMAS also discuss issues happening in our community and how they affect us and our families. We also talk about how teen pregnancies affect a girl's life and how she can continue her education if a pregnancy does happen. ALMAS hopes to lower the pregnancy rates in and around our school.

• ALMAS goal is to help Latina students raise their grades, complete high school, go onto collee, and to lower the teen pregnancies at out school. ALMAS is also based on community service activities, and the community in general. ALMAS members also mentor one another and mentor younger students.
