If you think it takes deep pockets and political connections to make a difference, you are wrong. Sometimes, it's the smallest and most simple gestures that can brighten a day for volunteers and recipients alike. And the best part is, genuine gestures of kindness can make a big impact... and anyone can do them.
The San Francisco Chronicle wrote a piece this week about a group of young adults who distributed socks and desserts to people on the streets in the city's Tenderloin neighborhood:
20,000 BOOKS GIVEN OUT!
We gave out our 20,325th book this week at Bransford Elementary School. It was a great feeling. This is the school where we first started reading and giving out books. We now have a relationship with the children, families, and teachers at the school. We have helped build home libraries for the children and they are excited to pick up a new book each time we visit the school. We realized this week how important the support we've received from the school staff has been in encouraging My Own Book.
YOU Could Give Out the 20,000th Book to a Less Fortunate Child!
My Own Book is dedicated to spreading the joy of reading by visiting K-3rd Grade classrooms, reading aloud, and letting the children choose from a selection of brand new books. It is fun and easy to do and we are always looking for volunteers to help. All you need to do to get involved is:
1. Identify a local school with needy children or a library that serves underprivileged kids.
2. Set up a time/date to read to them (by talking with the principal or head librarian)
3. Contact us and tell us how many books/bookplates you need and we will ship them out to you
4. Have the event!

Fall Into Reading with My Own Book
We hosted a Family Reading Night at Bransford Elementary, thanks to a generous grant from Target. We read aloud to the children . Next, teachers worked with the parents, giving tips on how to read aloud. Each child got to pick a book of their very own, and we added a bookplate with their name on it. In addition, we hosted a raffle for the kids with different stuffed book characters (Oscar the Dog, for instance) and their matching books. The children had a great time and including the families was a good way to interact with more of the community.
Start a My Own Book Chapter in Your Town
We'd love to have you volunteer to read to children, distribute books, or run book drives for My Own Book. There is plenty opportunity and lots of fun to be had!
