WELL OF CHANGE is a social change initiative creating a new breed of philanthropist. We match enthused volunteers with money making opportunities and then forward the proceeds to their favorite charity. www.wellofchange.org We mobilizing the community to better serve charities and nonprofits. We redefine volunteering and allow you to do anything, anywhere, anytime for the cause you care about most.

The Facts:
90% is the amount of reading you will do as an adult for informational purposes vs leisure (Scholastic Research)

85% of Juvenile Offenders are functionally illiterate (National Institute of Corrections)

60% of Adult prisoners are functionally illiterate (US Dept of Justice, National Institute of Corrections)

50% of the unemployed are functionally illiterate (US Dept of Labor)

Imagine that the only books that you ever had were the ones from school: heavy textbooks, dogeared paperbacks, and laborious novels. There would be no incentive to lose yourself in a book...come to think of it maybe that's why so many books are lost at school each year!

At My Own Book we figured out that it takes all sorts of things to get kids interested in reading. You never know what it will be that gets the spark going, but once the fire is started it is hard to put out. You've got to use the right fuel: sometimes the children get interested by seeing our teen volunteers act out stories, other times it is getting to pick out a book of their very own to take home, and sometimes it is seeing a community hero read aloud. Not much can beat a fire fighter reading and then showing off his fire truck!

My Own Book has great volunteers! It started with our friends joining in to help, and now teens across the country have volunteered to read, give out books, and host book drives. It is fun to share the joy of reading!

Several of our volunteers are bilingual which is great.

We'd love more volunteers! If you like the idea of reading to children, helping them choose books, or running book drives please let us know!

Our teen volunteers are the best! They make reading fun by picking fun books to read aloud and acting out the stories. They engage the kids as they read, and serve as role models for the younger children.
Many of our volunteers are bilingual which is great since we often read to children that speak both spanish and english.
By volunteering with My Own Book teens get a sense of pride of being part of the community, helping others, and it is great to work with younger children. Plus, we have a great time at events!

My Own Book Makes the Holiday's Bear-y Nice

Teen volunteers will be on hand at Bransford Elementary School's holiday musical performance evening to read and let the children pick out books. We picked this evening because we wanted the entire family on hand to see that reading is fun! We are also letting each child enter our drawing for one of five FIVE FOOT TALL teddy bears complete with a teddy bear book.
In addition, we've teamed up with Hi 4-H to have crafts and cookies on hand for the families. This should help make the event great!

My Own Book is hosting a Gingerbread House Display and Auction. We have asked for donations of gingerbread houses from private individuals, clubs, bakeries, restaurants, etc. We are posting pictures of each of the gingerbread houses on our website and encouraging individuals to bid on the houses to raise money to buy books to promote and share the love of reading.
