27,000 BOOKS AND MORE TO GIVE!
It is hard to believe but we've now given out more than 27,000 books! This is truly exciting for us. We have been working hard at keeping the momentum going: we recently ran a "Design Our Volunteer's T-Shirt" contest for all high school and college kids to enter. We got some great designs plus we also picked up new volunteers. In addition, we have recently written the following letter to our local service clubs and elected officials:
20,000 BOOKS GIVEN OUT!
We gave out our 20,325th book this week at Bransford Elementary School. It was a great feeling. This is the school where we first started reading and giving out books. We now have a relationship with the children, families, and teachers at the school. We have helped build home libraries for the children and they are excited to pick up a new book each time we visit the school. We realized this week how important the support we've received from the school staff has been in encouraging My Own Book.
YOU Could Give Out the 20,000th Book to a Less Fortunate Child!
My Own Book is dedicated to spreading the joy of reading by visiting K-3rd Grade classrooms, reading aloud, and letting the children choose from a selection of brand new books. It is fun and easy to do and we are always looking for volunteers to help. All you need to do to get involved is:
1. Identify a local school with needy children or a library that serves underprivileged kids.
2. Set up a time/date to read to them (by talking with the principal or head librarian)
3. Contact us and tell us how many books/bookplates you need and we will ship them out to you
4. Have the event!
My Own Book Reads Across America
We're hitting the street Monday to celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday and Read Across America day. We've teamed up with the Armijo National Honor Society to visit a local elementary school, read aloud, tell about the public library and let the children choose their very own book. This is an annual event for us and lots of fun. We will give out over 400 books in one day! And see a lot of really happy kids!
If you want to start a My Own Book chapter let us know by emailing kyleandbrady@myownbook.net
it is fun, rewarding and easy!

We Want to Give Every Child Under Age 8 in the US a Book! And we want YOU to read to them!
We 've decided to get a book to every child in the US under the age of 8. Plus, we want someone to read the book aloud to them. This month we're hosting a National Share the Joy of Reading event and want to know of any children you know that do not have books. Send us their name, address (this can be a school) and age and we'll send you a book to read to them.
Teens across the country can open their hearts, while turning pages and opening doors.
Send us the names and we'll send you books.

What if the only books you ever had were the ones at school?!?!?!
Imagine that the only books that you ever had were the ones from school: heavy textbooks, dogeared paperbacks, and laborious novels. There would be no incentive to lose yourself in a book...come to think of it maybe that's why so many books are lost at school each year!
Vote for My Own Book in the Best Buy @15 Challenge-PLEASE!
We've been busy the last few days getting the word out about the Best Buy @15 Competition. If we win, we could really make a difference with so many children. It is difficult to imagine growing up without books, and never having the pleasure of looking for that special book to have for your very own. Researchers have found that it only takes ONE book to spark a love of reading in a child forever. We hope our program develops that spark with the children.
Please vote for My Own Book in the Best Buy @15 Challenge. You could change the life of 8,002 children!
Reading is Sweet: Gingerbread Houses!
We've been busy getting our gingerbread house ready for the 'Reading is Sweet' gingerbread house display and auction. We've heard from several folks who have completed their house and decided we better get on it ourselves. Here are some pictures:
If you look inside the front of the house you can see actual pictures of MOB volunteers reading books to kids(the children's pictures line the inner wall of the house.
