Bio
Raised the eldest of six, I learned leadership at an early age. My first venture was for my little brothers and their neighborhood friends who constantly complained they were bored. This annoyed me so I created a camp where the kids had fun and healthy things to do all day, like playing capture the flag, making good-for-you snacks, and reading books. Now 12 years later, I’m doing what I love—working for youth who address issues they are passionate about and doing something about problems in their very own backyard.
Me in a nutshell:
2000: Left for Guilford College, a Quaker liberal arts college in Greensboro, NC. Developed organization to link college volunteers to immigrants and refugees in the community to help with acculturation and mentorship. Spent four years with a family from Sudan, 'big sis' to four incredibly bright and loving kids. DJayed at college radio station, felt the punk and alternative needed a shot of world music. PoliSci and International Relations major, although junior year discovered Econ more practical, so pursued that fully, manifesting in an independent research project I conducted while living in Senegal regarding the African Growth and Opportunities Act.
Since graduating, spent a year in Paris studying at the Sorbonne, relief and recovery work in New Orleans (family from there). Worked for a Vietnamese NGO to advocate and aid Vietnamese after hurricanes, over 3,000 lost homes and livelihoods in rural coastal areas. Moved back to DC to work with the American Red Cross, and then found my dream job working for Youth Venture, empowering youth-led social change.
