Support classes for girls
If you’d ask most people from the basti (slum) near Churchgate in Mumbai, what is the place for girls in their community, the answer would be to groom herself “to be a good housewife, daughter in law, mother… period”. Girls are not meant to have any other aspirations.
Gita, is a 17 year old in this community who not only has challenged the above stereotype (by completing her school education), but she is inspiring and supporting other girls to do the same.
With the support of Youth Venture, Gita has launched a venture called “Shakthi”, through which she provides support classes for girls in her community. These one hour sessions include everything from exploring alphabets and poems to learning to read and write. She also creates awareness in her basti on the importance of sending girls to school.
