BACKGROUND AND RATIONALE
Climate Change and the African Youth – Take Action Now
Ever since, in the history of humanity, progress can have irreversible negative effects on the planet which humans are unable to forecast. (Climate changes, nuclear accidents, genetic engineering, the extinction of fauna and flora etc)
Nevertheless, individuals used to a certain way of life, continue to behave short- sighted, both as producers and consumers, Industrial pollution, the destruction of natural landscapes, wastage and such like occurrences.
The World’s (Especially Africa’s) population is increasing and natural resources are no longer sufficient, which increases the risks of conflict among people.
At the standstill of this country, we the young people of Kenya, taking account of these observations, purpose.
To call on other young people continually, through dialogue and action, at home, school and in the streets, to respect the environment and to keep themselves informed of the dangers of tampering with nature.
To take action on preservation and conservation of Natural and mineral resources to safeguard the natural species and Wildlife.
Oppose any form of pollution and disregard to the environment harm that contribute to global warming and climate changes.
Advocate for effective refuse collection so that rubbish can be recycled, to promote non-pollution forms of public transport and establish more green spaces.
GOAL AND PURPOSE
The ultimate goal of the clean-up event (project) is to raise the level of awareness of participants with regard to the 7th goal of Environmental Sustainability (UN MDGs) concept and how they can effectively destroy the vast opportunities they afford towards broad-based sustainable development in Africa.
An elevated awareness of the concept of the Nairobi River Clean-up, will lead to change in attitudes regarding youths ability and role to influence the ongoing Environmental Conservation process, which will turn result in the much desired increase in civic participation.
VISION
Kenyan youth are typically excluded both economically and environmentally from the sustainable process.
The clean-up will serve to mobilize Kenyan youths previously apathetic or uniformed regarding any form of social engagement to assume their role and voices in joining the New Light Youth Association for the Clean-up project.
OUTPUT
The out put for the Clean-up Project will be:
I.A raised awareness of the participants of the social and service engagement concept.
II.Participants’ identification of their significant roles as well as those of other Kenyan youths in the Environmental Sustainability process.
III.To reach possible resolutions to further initiate an Environmental Sustainability. Take Action Now Project (TAN-PROJECT) that will maximize approaches such as research, advocacy and identify key partners in the public and private sectors working to contribute to the implementation of the project goals and outcomes.
IV.Launching of Banners competition:-This will involve posting banners bearing the best messages on climate change during the Nairobi River Clean-up.
The best banner shall be awarded with a prize.
The TAN-PROJECT
Take action Now Project is a concept that will involve the formation of a committee and create strategic Youth team who will spearhead the meaningful initiative towards Environmental Conservation.
The Youth Team shall be involved in consultation at all times in order to gather the important information and data on climate changes.
The TAN-PROJECT which is the 2008 action project well lead to the Nairobi River Clean-up Scheduled for the 25th October 2008 and is expected to pull a mass participation of more than 10000 participants.
The Launching Ceremony of the TAN-PROJECT will take place on the 27th September, 2008 and will involve collection of more than 1000 signatures from youths pledging to Take Action Now and be involved in the Climate Change Advocacy and Campaigns.
PARTICIPANTS
The project will gather at least 2500 youths to learn, analyze situations and share experiences on how youths can take action in conserving the Environment and contributing effectively to the Millennium Development Goals.
There will be a conscious effort to attract participants playing crucial roles in the area of youth development, empowerment and civic engagement. This is to ensure that the participants impart the knowledge gained to others in the course of discharging their duties.
The introduction of the TAN-PROJECT will give fair ideas as to how the participants are making use of their knowledge.
METHODOLOGY
Output 1:- Will be achieved through opening address, keynote address, Lectures and interactive sections on the concept and a presentation on an African success history of Environmental Conservation and Sustainability.
We will involve/amount various stakeholders in the promotion of the Take Action Now Project (TAN-PROJECT).
Output 2:- Will be achieved by organizing a workshop on specific areas of Natural Resources conservation concept.
This will require each participant to effectively contribute relevantly in the discussion process towards drafting a resolution and plan of action to be implemented. This will be in a form of break away sessions.
Output 3:-Will use a system of monitoring and evaluation by the participants to appraise and review progress made during TAN-PROJECT to achieve sustainable development in their respective organization, communities and the nation as a whole.
This approach will afford the participants a chance to keep in touch with each other and to measure the progress made by them in utilizing the social impact engagement projects.
PARTNERSHIP
In the quest of New Light Youth Association to make good the implementation of this sustainable project on Environmental Sustainability, it would be glad to be in partnership with interested bodies, both private and public institutions.
It is expected that this relationship will be of mutual benefit to both the Kenyan youths and the various partners in the summit.
Critical to the success of the project will also be the partnership of authorities in the subject of Environmental and Natural Resources conservation such as Government representatives, Youth Ministries, Environmental Organization and other like minded partners.
Success at this partnership and project will lead to a long-term process that will be to the mutual advantage of all parties involved both directly and indirectly.
