Bio

A few other students and I recently started an organization called A Thousand Wings. Our main purpose is to hold fund raisers here in America and raise enough money to help fund the poorest schools in Hubei, China.

Goals

  • I need help completing Youth Venture’s action plan
  • I need help passing Youth Venture’s selection panel
  • I launched a venture in the last 12 months and could use help
  • I have started a venture and want to share insights
  • I want to reach out to YV alumni
  • We want to make A Thousand Wings an official non-profit fund raising organization. By making this an official group and legitimizing it, the public will be able to take us more seriously. We are also interested in finding about other groups that also fund money for the poor schools in China.

Interests

Children, College/University, Community Development, Community Organizing, Cultural Awareness, Discrimination, Education, Health, Higher Education, Technology, Vocational Education, Youth Empowerment

Oh the application, I did that with my friends. My suggestions are that you get a group meeting going where you will discuss what you write on your form. When I filled mine out, the club only had three members, and it was very diffucult-- because the day we did it, one girl was sick. Some of our ideas were completely un-realistic and our club has changed focuses greatly over the past year. Think about your location, whether or not the club will be affiliated with another institution (i.e. a school), etc. This should help you realize what you will be able to accomplish, what has already been done, and will also give you ideas for great ideas. When you plan your calendar-- write down anything that you think you may do- then go back and prioritize it, this way if you do not do everything, it is no big deal-- but you have ideas for the future!

I'll be sure to send you anything else I think of! Goodluck!

hey! what you are doing is amazing, helping schools in china is really great! do you have a specific school you are working with, it would be really cool if you could find one school to write back and forth with, and find out what they really need. Then you can begin getting items and money for them to have these items! I would love to help out however I can, what you are doing is great! Please feel free to write any time,
Jessie!

Hi! Sorry for not getting back to you sooner! I'll definitely try to help you in anyway I can. If I come across anything that I think will be useful, I'll send it your way. I looked at your team profile and you did a great job describing the situation in China. Do you have pictures or videos of the classrooms and schools? I think it'd be a great way to show your case. :-D

If you have any questions about action plan or selection panel, do let me know! Quick question, did you find out about us through United Way? I noticed that you faved Massachusetts. Rachel is a great colleague! ^_^

Hi! Welcome to GenV.net!!! :-) That is such a great idea! I loved studying abroad in China. I've never been to Hubei, but I did study in Hangzhou for semester. While in Zhejiang Province, we went to the countryside for a week. That week really was an eye-opener for a lot of us. We all knew about the conditions of the countryside, but that was our chance to see it. All the Chinese students were sooooo happy and proud of their school. They held our hands and dragged us around their school. They were so poor and their school was so bear, but they were still so excited about learning and going to school. It was the highlight of their town. Anyway, I'm very excited that you want to help more of them get an education. I know of one person on the site who's working with Dream Corps. They "recruit, train and send university volunteers to work at least three weeks during the summer, to establish a rural library at one of the rural sites in physical and institutional terms." Maybe you can learn from them and incorporate some of their ideas. :-) Have you thought about creating a team profile for A Thousand Wings? It is a great way to spread information about your organization and recruit help. Also, make sure you check out the Dream It section for tips on action plan and selection panel. Let me know if you have any questions!
