As the population of New York City grows, so too does the need to tackle the problems inherent in any metropolitan area. One of the largest challenges this city faces is the effective allocation of resources in the municipal budget. As of now, there is a great strain on New York City to provide the opportunity for appropriate living conditions, education, effective transportation, and other public services. As this strain increases , the usual remedy is to cut expendable programs such as recycling as witnessed in 2002. Though a recycling program has recently been reinstated, it has been difficult to sustain due to the on-again-off-again nature. Regardless of whether the city is able to afford an effective recycling program, the fact still remains that recycling is crucial to maintaining the quality of life and beautification within New York.
Providing recycling is only half the battle of reducing the environmental impact of such a large and industrious city. An effective recycling program must also engage the public and encourage participation. By linking recycling to community development, the incentive for participation is greatly increased. This link also serves to emphasize the fact that the end goal of recycling is to improve the environment in which we all live. It is also important to mention that WeCycle will be saving New York City hundreds of thousands of dollars annually. Most of this savings will stem from reduced city commitment to public recycling as well as lower costs associated with a decreased dependence on landfills.
Another primary focus of WeCycle is the development of our community. Through our commitment, we hope to give back to the communities of New York in honor of their hard efforts to improve our City. WeCycle development projects, both small and large, will show New Yorkers how effective their participation can truly be. It is New Yorkers themselves that stand to benefit from recycling through WeCycle. WeCycle provides the opportunity for everyone to get involved in their community simply by place a recyclable in a WeCycle bin. The combination of our commitment to reduce our environmental impact while supporting development within our city reinforces our belief that recycling is a community effort.
