Poverty Facts and Stats

Hey guys,

I was just surfing the net when I came across these facts about poverty. I couldn't believe what I was reading! So I want to share it with everyone:

1. Half the world — nearly three billion people — live on less than two dollars a day.
2. The poorest 40 percent of the world’s population accounts for 5 percent of global income. The richest 20 percent accounts for three-quarters of world income.
3. According to UNICEF, 26,500-30,000 children die each day due to poverty. And they “die quietly in some of the poorest villages on earth, far removed from the scrutiny and the conscience of the world. Being meek and weak in life makes these dying multitudes even more invisible in death.”
4. Based on enrollment data, about 72 million children of primary school age in the developing world were not in school in 2005; 57 per cent of them were girls. And these are regarded as optimisitic numbers.
5. Almost two in three people lacking access to clean water survive on less than $2 a day, with one in three living on less than $1 a day.

So I want to say all of you guys who are out there making a difference - You're amazing! Keep your dreams alive and together we can fight poverty.

For those of you who are interested in poverty issues, I thought you'd be interested in a newly launched website to teach kids about microfinance.

Through the newly launched www.OneHen.org website, youth have the opportunity to help change the world through microfinance. Launched with school children at City Year headquarters in Boston, and developed by Sapient Interactive and Bain & Company’s CommunityWorks program as a pro-bono project, www.OneHen.org is designed to educate children and families about the benefits of microfinance.

Through www.OneHen.org children interact one-on-one in a virtual village with microfinance. The site features interactive games where children can earn beads and then “loan” them to small businesses in the virtual marketplace, allowing them to see firsthand the power one small action can make in the lives of many. For each bead loaned, the site makes a donation to actual poor entrepreneurs through Opportunity International, a global microfinance organization.

We invited you and your children to visit the One Hen website – a colorful and interactive resource for children, parents, teachers…everyone!

Facts of Poverty

Facts of poverty: (The statistics are shocking)

1) Nearly half of the world’s population live on less than $2 a day. Yet the average subsidy each cow receives in the whole of the UK is about $1.
2) 40 million people are living with HIV/AIDs today, of these 40 million people, 93% live in the developing world.
3) Last year, 2000 infants became HIV positive during pregnancy, birth or through breastfeeding.
4) Last year, the world’s largest foreign development donor was America, who donated $19 billion which made up 0.16% of their Gross National Income (GNI). Unfortunately, America is still a long way from reaching its promised 0.7%. Also, of this $19 billion, $2.9 billion went towards the re-development of Iraq.
Australia is not doing much better, last year we donated 0.25% of our GNI towards foreign development.
5) Over 130 million children of primary school age in developing countries are growing up without access to basic education.
6) Almost one billion people entered the 21st Century unable to read a book or sign their name, and this number is growing.
7) 800 million people in the developing world are chronically undernourished.
8) 1.2 billion people live without access to clean drinking water.
9) 12% of the World’s population use 85% of its water (these 12% do not live in the third world).
10) 5,000 children die each day as a result of poor sanitation and water. Though for some reason...
Europe spends more money on ice cream that the entire globe spends on sanitation and water.
11) The world’s military expenditure is eighty-five times larger than what is spent globally on sanitation and water.
What would you do to help those 800 million people who are chronically undernourished?

If anyone else have a interesting fact about poverty that they would like to share, feel free to reply to this post.
