What
BEtrend ร่วมกับ a day และ Youth Venture ชวนหนุ่มสาวที่มีความคิดแปลกใหม่ อยากเปลี่ยนแปลง สิ่งรอบตัวให้ดีขึ้นจำนวน 100 คน ที่อยากมาร่วมกันรวมพลังช่วยกอันคิด และสร้างสรรค์กิจกรรมที่มีไอเดียเจ๋งๆ สนุกๆ และแปลกใหม่ที่สามารถเปลี่ยนแปลงสิ่งแวดล้อมให้ดีขึ้นได้ ณ ลาน Parc Paragon ในวันที่ 11 พฤษาคม 2552 เพื่อชวนคนกรุงเทพฯ มาร่วมทำอะไรดีๆ เพื่อสิ่งแวดล้อมด้วยกัน

Why
ถ้าเราไม่ทำแล้วจะรอให้ใครมาทำ คนรุ่นใหม่เปี่ยมไปด้วยศักยภาพ ความคิดสร้างสรรค์ และพลังที่ พร้อมจะเปลี่ยนแปลงโลกใบนี้ให้ดีขึ้น ในโครงการนี้จะเป็นเสมือนโรงเรียนที่ทุกคนจะได้เรียนรูู้ทักษะ และวิธีการทำงาน ร่วมกับผู้อื่นร่วมกันเรียนรู้ชีวิต สร้างประสบการณ์ดีๆ และเพื่อนแท้ รวมถึงสร้างประโยชน์โดยตรงให้กับคนทั่วไป จากทำกิจกรรมของเรา และเนื่องจากปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อมในปัจจุบันนับวันมีแต่จะซับซ้อน และหนักหนาขึ้นเรื่อยๆ เราจึงต้องการความคิดใหม่ๆ และความพยายามในการแก้ปัญหาที่มากขึ้น แม้ว่าคนทั่วโลกจะเข้าใจตรงกันว่า ปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อมคือเรื่องใหญ่ แต่เราก็ยังพูดกันมากกว่าลงมือทำและสิ่งที่เราลงมือทำนั้นก็ยังไม่มากพอที่จะช่วยบรรเทา

MLK, Jr. Day of Service Photos

The YV staff in the National and Mid-Atlantic office and volunteers who were visiting DC for the Inauguration rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty- all in the name of service. The YV staff was proud to host their MLK Day event at the Boys & Girls Club in Northeast DC. At the Club, YV and volunteers helped to clean up and give a much needed paint job to the Teen Center and the Multi Purpose Room in preparation for the teen participants of the Club to paint murals to beautify their space.

It was a long fun-filled day. YV had the opportunity to speak with volunteers about Youth Venture and give examples of all the wonderful projects Venturers do, and volunteers shared their reasons for serving.

U.S. Soccer Foundation

The U.S. Soccer Foundation funds soccer projects around the US, including equipment, uniforms, field renovation, coaches and referees fees and much more. For 2009, the Foundation will award Grants exclusively to projects and programs that develop players, coaches, and referees in economically disadvantaged urban areas encompassing populations of 50,000 or more. William James Foundation Socially Responsible Business Plan Competition

Knight Foundation News Challenge

Richmond Community Foundation’s Youth Philanthropy Project

A group of youth help determine what projects implemented by youth should receive funding from this Richmond foundation. The National Gardening Association awards grants for groups of more than 15 people between the ages of 3 and 18 who garden together. If you are passionate about the environment and would like to get your Venture team involved in creating a community garden, this grant may be for you.

Humane Teen of the Year Award

The Teen of the Year is a teen who has worked to benefit animals, either directly or by educating others, and will be awarded a $300 cash prize and a feature story at Humane Teen.

Environmental Excellence Awards

Schools and community groups are eligible to apply for the Environmental Excellence Awards for community beautification, habitat restoration and other cool environmental projects. Winners will receive $10,000 for the project and a trip to SeaWorld.

Gladys Marinelli Coccia Awards

Youth Service America is pleased to launch the first annual Gladys Marinelli Coccia Awards to recognize two young female social entrepreneurs, ages 14 to 17, whose initiatives serve the common good. The awards are created in memory of Gladys Coccia, who began her entrepreneurial career when she was a young girl in West Virginia and later became a very successful businesswoman in Washington, DC.  Nominations from across the country are welcome; special consideration will be given to nominees from West Virginia and metropolitan Washington, DC. Self-nominations are accepted. 

KIDS Consortium

KIDS (Kids Involved Doing Service-Learning) Consortium, a nonprofit organization that serves schools and community groups in Maine and throughout New England, and the State Farm Youth Advisory Board, are offering mini-grants for green service-learning projects developed by K-12 schools in New England.

Grants of up to $750 each will support service-learning projects addressing topics such as energy efficiency and recycling proposed by K-12 educators, students, and community organizations working with youth. Funded projects must solve a problem or address a local need related to making schools and neighborhoods healthier and more environmentally sustainable.

The Volvo Adventure Award (US & Overseas applicants)

Changemakers Competitions

Changemakers, an initiative of Youth Venture’s parent organization Ashoka, offers open international competitions for people to propose solutions to the world’s most complex problems. Entrants post their projects online and they are discussed for approximately 11 weeks before 12 finalists are chosen and three winners win a US $5,000 prize. Regardless of if you want to submit an entry, the ideas proposed are amazing!

These outstanding $500 grants are given to youth who have already started an organization and need more money to fund it. No 501(c)(3) status is necessary. One letter of recommendation is required. A winner is chosen every week and will be featured on the website.

Mix It Up Grants

The Southern Poverty Law Center awards Mix It Up Grants for youth-led projects that work at knocking down social boundaries within school communities. This project must bring different groups together to work together, and the project should be an ongoing effort. Applications are accepted anytime and you will be notified after four weeks if your project has been accepted.

Tools and resources to help make your event a success are also available on the website and will be sent to you by YSA upon registration.

Books

If your Venture is in need of books for children, there are several places where you can try getting books donated. You need a 501(c)(3) status. If you don’t have it, I would suggest pairing up with an organization that does have 501(c)(3) status and would also benefit from books.

The Lisa Libraries donates children’s books to small grassroots non-profit organizations that serve low-income children. They have donated books to day-care centers, after school programs and prison visiting areas for children of incarcerated parents.

First Book

This organization offers nonprofits the opportunity to get books at a highly discounted price. It offers several programs based on your specific needs, but generally organizations need to be working with low-income children and/or incorporate literacy or reading into their programs.

Barnes and Noble

Unfortunately Barnes and Noble does not give out grants or scholarships. However, they may offer you fundraising opportunities at the local level. Applications must be made to the store manager or community relations manager at your local Barnes and Noble branch.
