About Us

We make middle school students aware of the dangers that are presented by alcohol, other drugs, and self-defeating behaivors

The Student Leadership Services, Inc. STAND SAB (Students Taking A New Direction Student Advisory Board), believe that middle school students need to be made aware of the dangers that are presented by drugs, alcohol and other self-defeating behaviors. Research indicates age of first use is approximately 11.3 years old. The summers of 7th and 8th grade are also noted as particularly vulnerable times for youth because they tend to experiment with non-healthy behaviors that damage their physical and emotional health. Today’s youth also lack healthy nutrition and physical activity. In fact, approximately, 21.4 % of youth are overweight in Oakland County, Michigan and 15.5 % overweight nationally. We need to change the numbers by leading “STAND To Be Active” groups.
The STAND SAB will be trained and will develop a series of three 50 minute workshops and handouts that address Attitudes and Behaviors Towards Substance Abuse Prevention, Violence and Injury Safety and Health and Nutrition The STAND SAB and Allies will contact middle schools to schedule the workshops. “STAND To Be Active” lessons will address the whole student: emotional; social; psychological, and physical health in 11-14 aged youth.
This project will motivate middle school students to start STAND Chapters and begin planning projects that reinforce the four areas of health covered in the initial lessons.
Youth leading youth is very effective prevention. We believe in teaching youth the skills necessary to help them make positive choices and deal with peer pressure.
