We 've decided to get a book to every child in the US under the age of 8. Plus, we want someone to read the book aloud to them. This month we're hosting a National Share the Joy of Reading event and want to know of any children you know that do not have books. Send us their name, address (this can be a school) and age and we'll send you a book to read to them.

Teens across the country can open their hearts, while turning pages and opening doors.

Send us the names and we'll send you books.

Reading IS Sweet!

This gingerbread house was donated by Spun Sugar out of Berkeley. It is so beautiful! We are hosting a big event Saturday with girl scouts and the high school's leadership class coming out to read and distribute books. In addition, we'll have all the gingerbread houses on display. We'll be going to the California Institute at Greystone this week to pick up eight houses. This is a very fun event. We're particularly happy because we have reached out to a whole new group of volunteers. We hope to bring the children into the library with the houses and hook them on reading!

The Facts:
90% is the amount of reading you will do as an adult for informational purposes vs leisure (Scholastic Research)

85% of Juvenile Offenders are functionally illiterate (National Institute of Corrections)

60% of Adult prisoners are functionally illiterate (US Dept of Justice, National Institute of Corrections)

50% of the unemployed are functionally illiterate (US Dept of Labor)

Cowgirl Sarah rounds up readers

Sarah, one of our dedicated volunteers, brought stuffed animals and dressed up like a cowgirl at one of our events. She read animal stories to the children. It was great. She even brought a stuffed horse- and one little girl asked, wide-eyed, if it was real!

Volunteer with us and you're sure to have fun! www.myownbook.net

Even dogs like to read!

One day we had Sparky the fire dog come to one of our read-aloud events! The children loved him! It was a great way to show that reading is fun!

Reading is Sweet: Gingerbread Houses!

We've been busy getting our gingerbread house ready for the 'Reading is Sweet' gingerbread house display and auction. We've heard from several folks who have completed their house and decided we better get on it ourselves. Here are some pictures:

If you look inside the front of the house you can see actual pictures of MOB volunteers reading books to kids(the children's pictures line the inner wall of the house.

If we win $10,000 from Best Buy@ 15 we would use it to buy books! We just started buying books directly from publishers at sharply discounted prices so we could buy 8,000 brand new books. That would make an awful lot of happy children and spread the joy of reading in a big way.

We've learned events work- they create excitement and make the kids excited about reading

Volunteers like to be a part of events- they get to experience the difference they are making in the community
