Gardens for Health International (USA)Aims to provide a sustainable means of nutritional support and economic empowerment to HIV-positive individuals by establishing a network of community agriculture initiatives throughout Rwanda while simultaneously targeting malnutrition, HIV/AIDS, and poverty. Girls Helping Girls (USA)Empowering girls to transform their world by mobilizing and training them to reach across cultural boundaries to learn about global issues, forge international friendships, and launch and implement their own social change projects, initiatives, or nonprofit ventures. Gumball Capital (USA)Engaging students to fight poverty by promoting entrepreneurship and microfinance through the Gumball Challenge, a competition where students create student-teams and use micro-loans for pursuing entrepreneurial ventures, and an online portal that functions as a guide for social change. Musso Fila: Women from here and afar-Musso Fila: Femmes d'ici et d'ailleurs (France)Educating people about the life experience of Malian women immigrants in France and the difference from that of women living in Mali, in particular with regard to the mother-daughter relationship, through a documentary that showcases the lives of these women and provides a strong cultural understanding to immigrant African women in France. Reading Support-Accompagnement vers La Lecture (France)Creating homework clubs that help disadvantaged children appreciate and familiarize them with books through the creation of their own story picture book. Encouraging children’s self expression provides them with a possitive and recreational introduction to books. Tennis for Fun (USA)Providing opportunities for integration to individuals with intellectual disabilities through the game of tennis by having fun, building confidence, being more socially integrated with the mainstream community, and developing valuable relationships with the non-disabled members of their community from whom they are so often isolated. Meanwhile, their participation in this activity in the community helps raise awareness about the intellectually disabled, break down barriers, and reduce social stigma The Hunger Brigade- La Brigade De la Faim (France)Providing alternative support to homeless and marginalized people by reaching out to them in their own comfort zones (as well as providing meals, sleeping bags, etc.) and building social interactions between them and their community. Turn your World Around (USA)Implements unique poverty-fighting initiatives while simultaneously providing youth with the tools to turn their passions into action through an online social change portal that allows teens to connect to mentorship opportunities, grassroots organizations, causes, and interactive project planning tools. Wetland Educators (USA)Preserving wetlands in Ohio by tackling the issue on many fronts such as education, awareness and engaging local communities by holding seminars to teach citizen-scientists how to monitor and preserve vernal pools, building osprey nesting platforms to replace habitat lost to development and farming for this wetland dwelling bird. Youth Adventure Program (USA)Creates outdoor recreation and education opportunities for local at-risk youth who are most impacted by environmental and health issues and integrating them into student-led trips that create a more relaxed and youth atmosphere while at the same time providing a variety of training and leadership opportunities. |

This initiative seeks to strengthen identities and a sense of cultural belonging within the Afro-Brazilian population by focusing on the body, dispelling stereotypes and stigmas, while promoting justice, tolerance, and solidarity. Fighting Against Dengue Fever (Argentina)Uses puppet shows, movies, and talks to raise awareness of dengue fever in high-risk communities in Argentina and Paraguay. ECOCLUB strives to reduce the rate of infection by encouraging people (especially children) to adopt healthy habits. Future Guardians (Yemen)A rare youth-run organization that promotes drug prevention and education among youth in Yemen. In a country where volunteerism is not prevalent, Future Guardians manages to attract many volunteers willing to receive training and promote awareness of drug prevention and treatment. Health Clinic and Education Service Center (Zambia)FORGE Health Services aims to provide health education and basic medical services to the 2,000 refugees in block G of a refugee camp in Zambia. FORGE believes in educating, training, and certifying members of the camp, which will allow them to help provide basic health services as well as learn skills that will be beneficial when they leave. Just Yell Fire (USA)Empowers girls and young women to fight back against physical abuse and abduction by teaching them simple street fighting skills. Just Yell Fire uses a variety of mediums, such as the Internet and traditional media, and works with schools to spread its message to an international audience. MAD - Make A Difference (India)Organizes volunteers to provide education and skills training to children in orphanages and street shelters in India. MAD also provides curriculum training and support to volunteers and career guidance to the youth. Mideast Youth: Providing Platforms for Public Voice (Bahrain)Inspires and provides young people from all sects, socio-economic backgrounds, and political and religious beliefs in the Middle East with an accessible online forum that allows for freedom of expression and lively but respectful online dialogue concerning the important issues of today. Sibhale (South Africa)A multifaceted project that takes on environmental degradation and health issues by creating a safe space that incorporates tree planting, a vegetable garden, and an artists’ expo. SIBAHLE works closely with the community to provide youth with opportunities to learn and to give back - by donating their organic produce to orphanages and senior homes Solar Lantern Project (Nicaragua)Develops and distributes a low cost solar lighting solution for Northern Nicaragua where 80% of the population does not have access to electricity. The subsidized solar lanterns help people read, study, work and do household chores without having to spend money on kerosene. Sport to Improve Lives of People with Disabilities (France)Uses sports and games to improve the quality of life of people with physical and intellectual disabilities in developing countries. APAID promotes the rights of this often neglected population and raises awareness of their abilities, rather than disabilities. Using Health to Build Power in Slums in Mali (Mali)Trains slum residents to build their own universal primary health care systems and break down the deadlock between the slums and their government. MHOP brings communities, Imams, NGOs, and the government together and facilitates mutual support. WIN '05 - Recycle and Reuse Our E-Waste (USA)Reduces the amount of e-waste that enters the environment through a sustainable system of reusing and recycling electronics that would otherwise be thrown away. WIN also raise awareness and advocates policy change to reduce e-waste. Wokai: P2P Microfinance for Rural China (China)An online peer-to-peer fundraising portal that allows individuals to provide micro-finance to entrepreneurs in rural China, helping the poor lift themselves out of poverty. Youth and Gender Development Program (Pakistan)Empowers young men and women in traditional communities of Pakistan to end gender discrimination and the practice of "honor killings." YGDP uses cricket and theatre to raise awareness among youth and offers them courses to help them develop skills and capacity. |
