Fire Captain reads to children- we use community heros to show that reading is fun!

At My Own Book we figured out that it takes all sorts of things to get kids interested in reading. You never know what it will be that gets the spark going, but once the fire is started it is hard to put out. You've got to use the right fuel: sometimes the children get interested by seeing our teen volunteers act out stories, other times it is getting to pick out a book of their very own to take home, and sometimes it is seeing a community hero read aloud. Not much can beat a fire fighter reading and then showing off his fire truck!
We're shameless about who we ask to read. We've had mayors, firefighter, police officers, guide dog trainers, Sparky the Dog, the Jelly Belly character, and even Gary Guittard from Guittard Chocolate read aloud to kids.
