Kids love choosing their very own book

You know how in school the teacher picks the book for the class to read and you just groan? It's enough to sap the life out of reading. We figured out how to change that though- we lay out a huge assortment of brand new books and let the children pick their very own book. Sometimes teachers will be there and tell the child "Oh, that is too old for you..." or "This is a better book for you.." Although the teachers mean well we found that a big part of the joy of reading is reading what you want to read. This is also why we make a big deal about telling the children about the public library. Once they have their own book, and have seen the variety of books that are available getting them to the library is like inviting a starving man to an all you can eat buffet.
