Carbon offsets - how do you feel about them?
I have heard of a couple of websites that allow people and businesses to offset their carbon emissions by paying. I don't know much about these programs and I am not sure how I feel about them. I like the fact that the money paid is invested in alternative energy projects and such, but I am a big believer in conservation and would rather see people focusing on ways to cut back on their emissions in the first place.
I read somewhere that Al Gore's lifestyle is not totally consistent with the message he puts out in An Inconvenient Truth. The irony is that his work to educate people about climate change means that he needs to travel a great deal. In my view, this is forgivable because he has become such an influential figure on the matter. Nevertheless, I think downsizing his home and driving a smaller car would be a powerful statement.
