Gale Lansing Davis ’63 and Shelby Cullom Davis
Believing that education is the pathway to true global understanding, the Shelby Cullom Davis family has selected Emma Willard School to participate in two groundbreaking pilot programs that further the school’s efforts to provide an empowering education to talented and motivated girls from across the globe.
The goal of both programs—one for international students and one for domestic students—is to attract highly motivated, potential future leaders who will benefit from the educational opportunities of select American boarding schools. The domestic program also seeks to serve those students who would be among the first in their family to attend college. Initial grants will be awarded in the 2008–2009 academic year.
Head of School Trudy E. Hall announced that the Davis family will award grants of up to $20,000 per student, per year based on demonstrated need. Students may enroll in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades as well as during the postgraduate year. Upon graduation from Emma Willard, Davis Scholars will be eligible for continued scholarship support should they enroll at any of the 89 Davis United World Scholars colleges and universities which now support more than 1400 students from 126 countries.
“The potential impact of this program is both profound and compelling,” said Hall. “This extraordinary opportunity comes at a moment when Emma Willard is well positioned to respond. We have a long tradition of educating a diverse group of women of merit, and the school shares the Davis family’s commitment to building cross-cultural understanding. As the leading educator of young women, Emma Willard is ready to leverage the value of this remarkable initiative to have a demonstrable and sustained impact on our world.”
Of the five boarding schools selected to participate—a group that also includes Andover, Lawrenceville, Taft, and Westminster—Emma Willard is the only school devoted exclusively to the education of girls. “We are thrilled that Gale Lansing Davis, a member of the class of 1963, and her family have chosen to include her alma mater in this endeavor,” Hall said. “Their generosity enhances our mission to provide the finest educational opportunities to the best and brightest girls, regardless of their means, as we prepare them to serve and shape our world. The fact that the Davis family will extend their support through the undergraduate years makes this program especially powerful.”
In supporting highly motivated and talented students from around the world, the Davis family looks to create a cadre of future leaders, Americans and non-Americans alike, whose shared perspectives and global experiences will prepare them to collaborate effectively in a demanding, increasingly interdependent world. Trudy Hall concludes, “As our world becomes smaller and yet increasingly complex, initiatives like the Davis Scholars Program will make a notable difference in levels of awareness, tolerance, and sensitivity among young people worldwide. What better way to prepare the leaders of tomorrow for the challenges they will face?”
