Books

If your Venture is in need of books for children, there are several places where you can try getting books donated. You need a 501(c)(3) status. If you don’t have it, I would suggest pairing up with an organization that does have 501(c)(3) status and would also benefit from books.

The Lisa Libraries
Website: http://www.lisalibraries.org/frames.html
Email: books@lisalibraries.org
The Lisa Libraries donates children’s books to small grassroots non-profit organizations that serve low-income children. They have donated books to day-care centers, after school programs and prison visiting areas for children of incarcerated parents.

First Book
Website: http://register.firstbook.org/#book_bank

This organization offers nonprofits the opportunity to get books at a highly discounted price. It offers several programs based on your specific needs, but generally organizations need to be working with low-income children and/or incorporate literacy or reading into their programs.

Barnes and Noble

Unfortunately Barnes and Noble does not give out grants or scholarships. However, they may offer you fundraising opportunities at the local level. Applications must be made to the store manager or community relations manager at your local Barnes and Noble branch.

Another website that has lists of additional scholarship and funding opportunities is The Freechild Project , found here: http://www.freechild.org/funds4progress.htm. The website also provides more information about issues that youth all over the U.S. are working on.

Hitachi Foundation Opens Nomination Period For Youth Community Service Awards

Deadline: April 1, 2008

The Hitachi Foundationpresents the Yoshiyama Award for Exemplary Service to the Community each year to ten high school seniors from around the U.S. on the basis of their community service activities.

Activities must foster longer-term community change and be focused in socially and/or economically isolated communities. The award is accompanied by a cash prize of $5,000 dispensed over two years. Recipients may use the award at their discretion. The award is not a scholarship.

High school seniors from the U.S. and U.S. territories are eligible to be nominated for the award. Re:

http://www.genv.net/en-us/do_it/fundraising/funding_businesses

This link has some great information. There is also a sample fundraising letter is the "Do It" section.

Getting an in-kind donation involves writing a letter to the store manager explaining your organization/event and why they should give you money.
Although conventional wisdom says that local stores are more likely than chains to give, I have had some good experiences with chain stores. A lot of chain stores also post their donation policy online, most often in a "community involvement" section or something like that. Most of the time, it is the local store branch that handles the request.

I usually call the business beforehand and explain what an event is and what my organization is. I find out the spelling of the name of the person who the request should be addressed to and their job title. I usually ask when a manager will be in and ask when is the best time to drop off a request in-person so I can try to meet the manager when I drop it off.
It is a great help for me to bring someone along for moral support who can just stand there while I talk :)

Hope this helps! I'm sure other people on this site have also had in-kind donation experiences to share...

Re: Money for Venture teams

Hi people,
We started a venture on youth education sponsored by the ministry but we never met our expectations due to lack of suport after the ministry pulled off.currently we still reach a few youths through games and talent shows but we dont get far due to lack of funds.
Our core idea was to keep youth occupied on there free times especially when out of schools and use this time constructively either in games and peer educations on matters affecting the youth eg:HIV &AIDS and drugs. Youths use this free time to engage in drugs and other criminal activities.
This is a venture which need help from individuals all over the world ,but will don't accept donations from child right violators or drug dealers.
We will accept all donations from individuals, organizations etc.
We hope to impact the youth in kenya positively.
We accept donation at any time. If you want to donate you can contact us at:

One Hen: How One Small Loan Made a Big Difference

(no money involved)

Are you interested in microfinance? Don't know what microfinance is? Then go to One Hen - Microfinance for Kids to learn more!

Through the newly launched www.OneHen.org website, youth have the opportunity to help change the world through microfinance. Launched with school children at City Year headquarters in Boston, and developed by Sapient Interactive and Bain & Company’s CommunityWorks program as a pro-bono project, www.OneHen.org is designed to educate children and families about the benefits of microfinance.

Through www.OneHen.org children interact one-on-one in a virtual village with microfinance. The site features interactive games where children can earn beads and then “loan” them to small businesses in the virtual marketplace, allowing them to see firsthand the power one small action can make in the lives of many. For each bead loaned, the site makes a donation to actual poor entrepreneurs through Opportunity International, a global microfinance organization.

We invited you and your children to visit the One Hen website – a colorful and interactive resource for children, parents, teachers…everyone!
