I Can Help Our Environment
Hello Everyone,
I am Jessie Mehrhoff, president of Green Teens U.S.A. an environmental club that is dedicated to helping the environment. I always loved nature, growing up with a father who is a biologist, but I became very interested in the environment when studying Rachel Carson. Carson was a marine biologist turned environmental writer, best know for her book Silent Spring.
I have attended 3 environmental conferences in the past 4 years and at the last one, and at the last one The 2006 TUNZA International Children's Conference on the Environment, held in Putrajaya, Malaysia- I was the North American Representative Jr. Board Member. These conferences were great and really gave me a bunch of ideas as to how I could help make our environment a better place. Bringing together ideas from all over the world is a recipe for success.
I believe in thinking globally and acting locally (though getting the chance to act globally is a dream of mine as well) so in order to make the world a better, healthier place I am going to teach my community members, starting even with young children, about the importance of taking care of Mother Nature. I will start off with my environmental club which works closely with both adults and young children, stressing the importance of things like tree planting, the 3 "r"s (Reduce, Reuse Recycle), and how simple it is to make your everyday living have a smaller impact on the world. I myself only use cloth bags, recycle all materials possible, and use energy star and environmentally friendly appliances and light bulbs. I plan to change the world through education and positive reinforcement and will study the environment in college. Making sure that the public becomes more environmental may not be an easy task, but living an earth friendly lifestyle sure is as well as a passion of mine!
Thanks for reading,
Jessie Mehrhoff

Re: I Can Help Our Environment
I just started reading Rachel Carson's Silent Spring! It is a wonderfully straightforward book, that I feel present day environmentalists would be well advised to emulate. It provides endless facts and research from then disparate sources, thoroughly convinces the reader that change MUST occur, and demonstrates how individual action is necessary to change all without being sensationalist! Thanks for letting everyone know about such a great inspiration and for sharing the path that this inspiration has led you to follow :)
And congratulations for being the North American representative at the 2006 TUNZA International Children's Conference on the Environment- what an honor!
