Careless Driving
Just recently one of my best friends Brian was hit by a car and killed. The person who hit him was 16 years old and was dared to drive faster to go up over a hill by a 14 year old. This stupid mistake took the life of a 13 year old boy. Everybody was devastated. I think the blame should fall on the driver. He was the older person and should not have circum to the peer pressure of a 14 year old. Signs all over the streets said "Caution children at play". I want to be angry with the person who hit him but it is very hard because you know that he is going to wake up everyday knowing he killed a young boy. I think the 16 year old should face the consequences of his actions and the 14 year old should have to have some sort of community service. Although both of them feel horrible they can never be sorry enough to replace someone who meant so much to everyone in the community. Just leave some of your opinions on this tragic event.

Re: Careless Driving
I don't know what to say. What a huge and unnecessary loss. I agree with your thought on community service. I think you are right about the blame falling on the driver. It seems like the driver should have his driver's license taken away for several years. I imagine he is suffering as well, knowing his mistake resulted in someone's death. Like you said, this is a tragic event. I hope you'll be able to remember all the times you spent with Brian before this tragedy.

I agree too. I had the opportunity of visiting the Museum of Tolerance recently, and they had us do an exercises where we watched a news report on a drunk driving accident, and then voted on who we felt was most responsible. You would be amazed at how many voted that it was not the drivers fault at all.
Re: Careless Driving
i have always been a nervous driver which annoys a lot of my friends... but i would so much rather have the roads filled with cautious/overly alert drivers like myself then those who think of driving as a game. some people don't realize the enormous responsibility they are holding in their hands when they get behind the wheel of a huge mass of metal.
my heart goes out to your community.
Re: Careless Driving
My condolences to your community, Emily.
Like Malena, I still get a little anxious whenever I get behind the wheels. Most people I know got their driver's license when they were 17 or 18. I only got my license a few months ago at the age of 21, and that was because I had to. I had to get to Santa Monica from Downtown LA somehow... :-D
In California, you have to be at least 15.5 years old to get your driver's permit and 16 to get your license. What is the age requirement in your state/country? What do you think the age requirement should be? Some people believe that children (anyone under the age of 18) should not be behind the wheels. They argue that most are not mature enough to drive a car. To them, a car is a deadly weapon, which I agree with. They believe that too many kids get into serious car accidents because they are not paying attention to driving (ie. they are chatting on their cell phones, changing CD's, radio stations, joking with a car full of kids, or showing off by speeding). What do you think?
