Bio

I'm a country girl living the city life at New York University. I spent the summer of 2006 in Barahona, Dominican Republic working on Community Based-Initiative's and teaching school. I have 3 years of experience working in NYC public schools as a math and literacy tutor, but am absolutely thrilled to take a break from it to teach school for 4 months in North Labone, Accra, Ghana. I am missing my PIVE team dearly while I am away, but I am thrilled with all the work everyone has been doing to help develop and sustain our venture. Check out nypive.org to find out all of the exciting things that are going on! I love keeping busy and am always up for a challenge. Positive thinking is more than half the battle.

Goals

  • I launched a venture in the last 12 months and could use help
  • Promoting Immigrant Voices in Education's (PIVE's) Mission: The purpose of PIVE is to further immigrant parents' awareness of their rights to translation and interpretation services in New York City public schools, in order to provide greater opportunities for meaningful involvement in their children's education. Through collaboration with individual schools and community organizations, PIVE holds community educational outreach events to inform parents of the availability of language access services, which enhance their ability to navigate the public school system. PIVE will also offer an ESL/Parent Leadership program, which will infuse political education and advocacy skills directly into English lessons. With the minimalization of language barriers, parents/guardians are better equipped to monitor their children's academic progress and to more effectively advocate on his or her behalf. PIVE's initiative creates a crucial step toward the success of New York City's new immigrant families and their children, whom are the first to be educated in America, through nurturing the relationship between parents and the educational process. PIVE’s Programs: • Educational Community Workshops • ESL/Parent Leadership Classes • Family & Community Events
