About Us
Our mission is to help provide public schools with a means to raise additional funds for their arts programs.
Threads That Teach was established by two undergraduate music students at New York University in 2007. Their vision was to utilize their love for the arts to help those in need in their community. Living in New York City, it was common to see the city’s youth performing in extracurricular dance troupes, step teams and choirs. However, the two NYU students began to wonder about those young children who did not have the transportation or financial means to join these teams, clubs, and classes-- with public schools cutting funds for arts education, how could those children continue to pursue their dreams?
Arts education for young students serves many different purposes. First, the arts can be a positive outlet for the youthful mind to set free its ideas and develop its creative intuition. Second, exposure to the arts is exposure to our culture, as well as cultures past and present all over the world. Giving children this experience is of the utmost importance, as it builds character and opens their eyes in ways that a more conventional education may not. With that in mind, Threads That Teach was founded to provide greater access to the arts for those children who truly seek it.
